Although the term essay has become known as a kind of writing in Modern English, its roots supply us with some helpful insights. The word comes to the English language during the French influence on Middle English; dispersing it back further, we find the French form of the word stems from the Latin verb exigere, meaning"to examine, test, or (literally) to push out." Throughout the excavation of this ancient word, we are able to unearth the essence of the academic article: to inspire students to examine or analyze their ideas concerning a particular topic.
As is evidenced by this list of attributes, there's much to be gained from the student who tries to be successful at essay writing.
The purpose of an article is to encourage students to develop ideas and concepts in their writing with the direction of little more than their own notions (it could be handy to observe the composition as the conversation of a study paper). Therefore, essays are (by nature) concise and need clarity in direction and purpose. This means there is not any room for the pupil's ideas to wander or stray out of her or his function; the writing must be deliberate and intriguing.
This handout should help students become comfortable and familiar with the process of essay composition via the introduction of some frequent essay genres.
